Every saree looks more or less the same laid flat and nothing like each other on a body. Drape is the entire garment: how the pleats sit, whether the pallu holds a fold or slides off the shoulder, how much the fabric weighs by the end of an evening. A photograph tells you the colour and the border. It tells you nothing useful about the rest.

What each fabric does

Georgette is the reliable one — a slight grain, holds pleats, moves well, and forgiving to drape if you are not doing it every week. Chiffon is lighter and more fluid, beautiful in motion and less forgiving; it wants to slip. Silk has body and formality and stays exactly where you put it, which is why it dominates weddings, but it is warm. Organza is crisp and sculptural, holds a shape almost architecturally, and photographs unlike anything else. Cotton is the everyday answer and the sensible one for a summer afternoon.

The blouse is half the outfit

People spend an hour choosing a sari and five minutes on the blouse, then wonder why the whole thing looks slightly off. The fit through the bust, back and sleeve is what makes a saree look considered. Bring measurements if you have them, and think about sleeve length and neckline before you settle on the fabric — a heavy border and a fussy neckline fight each other.

If you do not drape often
