A kurta pajama is a simple garment that goes wrong in exactly one place — the shoulder. Everything else can be adjusted or forgiven. A shoulder seam sitting two centimetres out makes an expensive kurta look like a borrowed one, and it is the detail no online listing can promise you.
Everyday
Cotton and muslin, straight cut, in white, cream, sage, grey or navy. These are the ones that get worn to family dinners, temple, a friend's house on a Sunday. They wash, they breathe, and they cost you nothing in comfort. Most men who buy one come back for a second in a different colour within the year.
Festivals and functions
Silk and dupion with a subtle sheen, sometimes with light thread work at the placket and cuffs, worn with a churidar. This is the Diwali and sangeet register — dressed up without being a wedding outfit. A contrast stole lifts it further if the occasion wants it.
Chikankari, which deserves its own paragraph
Lucknowi chikankari is hand embroidery worked in white or tonal thread on light cotton or muslin. It is the single best-looking thing a man can wear in an Ottawa summer: formal enough for a daytime wedding function, cool enough to sit through one. It also photographs far better than plain cotton because the texture catches light. Handle it gently in the wash and it lasts for years.
Weddings
For the ceremony itself, most grooms want structure — that is a sherwani rather than a kurta set. But the week around it is all kurta pajama: roka, mehendi, sangeet, the morning after. Buying the wedding outfit and the two or three kurta sets in one visit is the sensible way to do it, and it keeps the colours from clashing across the photographs.
Bring your shoes
Same rule as everything else here. The break of a pajama at the shoe, and the way a churidar stacks at the ankle, both depend on what is on your feet. It takes one minute to check in person and is invisible in every photograph online.

How should a kurta fit?
The shoulder seam sits on the corner of the shoulder, not past it. The chest closes without pulling when you reach your arms forward. The hem lands between mid-thigh and just above the knee depending on your height. Get those three right and almost anything looks good; get the shoulder wrong and nothing does.
Churidar or straight pajama?
Churidar is the more formal and traditional pairing — extra length that stacks in soft rings at the ankle, and the usual choice under a sherwani. A straight pajama is easier to wear and reads more relaxed, which suits everyday and daytime functions. Both are worth trying; most men are surprised which one they prefer once it is on.
Which fabric for a summer wedding in Ottawa?
Cotton, muslin or chikankari. A crowded hall in July is warmer than anyone plans for, and silk is a long evening in that room. Save the silk and dupion for winter functions and the ceremony itself, where the structure is worth it.
